jQuery Siblings

In logical relationships, elements that share the same parent are called siblings.

Numerous methods such as nextAll(), nextUntil(), siblings(), next(), prev(), prevAll() and prevUntil() that you can use to traverse sideways in the DOM tree are provided by jQuery.

 

jQuery siblings() Method

The method used in getting the sibling elements of the selected element is called the jQuery siblings().

In the example below, the siblings of the <p> element which are <h1> and <ul> are highlighted by adding the class .highlight on document ready.

To filter search for the siblings within the siblings() method, one or more selector can be optionally included as a parameter. In the example below, border will only be applied around the siblings of the <p> that are <ul> elements.

jQuery next() Method

In the jQuery next() method, the immediate or next sibling element of the selected element is derived. In the example below, the next sibling of the <p> element which is the <ul> element is highlighted.

jQuery nextAll() Method

So as to get all following siblings of the selected element the jQuery nextAll() method is used.

jQuery nextUntil() Method

The jQuery nextUntil() method is used to get all the following siblings up to but not including the element matched by the selector. In simple words we can say it returns all the next siblings elements between two given elements in a DOM hierarchy.

The following example will highlight all the following sibling elements of the <h1> element excluding the <ul> element i.e. highlight both the <p> element.

jQuery prev() Method

To get the immediately preceding or the previous sibling element of the selected element the jQuery prev() method is used. In the example below the previous sibling of the <ul> element which is the <p> element is highlighted.

jQuery prevAll() Method

In order to get all preceding siblings of the selected element the jQuery prevAll() method is employed.

In the example below all siblings of the <ul> element that come before this is highlighted.

jQuery prevUntil() Method

To get all the preceding siblings excluding the element matched by the selector the jQuery prevUntil() method is employed. This simply implies that all the previous siblings elements between two given elements in a DOM hierarchy are returned.

In the example below all the previous sibling elements of the <ul> element aside the <h1> element is highlighted i.e. both the <p> element is highlighted.
